Amphibians of Sitia
In humid regions, brooks, small lakes and standing water one can observe three species of amphibians throughout Sitia.
The green toad Bufo viridis is a nocturnal species not entirely depended on water as it drinks it only during its reproductive period and that is the reason why it can be found in totally dry regions.
The tree frog, Hyla arborea cretensis, is an endemic species in Crete, which makes up the only species of tree frog in Europe and it can be found in humid regions, especially near the town of Sitia.
The most common frog is called marsh frog, Rama ridibunda, which unlike the green toad is always near water where it finds food and reproduces.
